HOW MUCH DOES A KITCHEN COST?

If you've never bought a kitchen maybe you don't know how variable the cost can be. In addition to obvious considerations like the size of the room, the cost of even one kitchen model can vary tremendously on the basis of the materials and the quality of the appliances you choose. And in addition to the cost of the kitchen furniture, you must also take into account costs like consulting, craftsmen's labor costs, accessories, special equipment, paneling and decoration.

Plan your expenses

Before falling in love with a prestigious material or a high performance appliance you think you can afford, plan out all possible expenses including those which you never remember at first. It's useless to have bought sophisticated paneling if then you don't have enough money for the refrigerator!

In a kitchen to be completely renovated, here is a list of inevitable (or almost inevitable) costs:consulting and designing for the new kitchen

  • installation of heating, plumbing, gas and electrical systems
  • flooring - kitchen furniture: base units, cabinets, shelves and accessories
  • counter tops
  • wall paneling / finishing
  • sink and faucets
  • basic appliances: stove, ventilation hood, refrigerator, dish washer
  • delivery and installation of the kitchen To these we can add other contingent costs:
  • labor for restructuring
  • decoration (materials and labor)
  • handles and knobs
  • particular appliances: freezer, microwave, washer, dryer, garbage disposal...

Establish priorities within your budget To create the most realistic budget possible, attribute a cost to each of the items and establish their order of importance within the list. If you surpass your total desired cost, you can downsize your lowest priority items in favor of those which you do not intend to give up.

To understand what you can sacrifice, clearly define your requirements: what are your priorities? The style of the kitchen? The functions of your appliances?

For example, in favor of the kitchen furniture you might settle for a less expensive flooring, or to paint the walls or do the decorations yourself.

It might also help to remember that your total cost should be in proportion to the value of the house the kitchen will be in. In any case, the key to avoiding outrageous budgets is realism: it's no use wanting the latest model of steam oven or a crystal table if you already know you haven't the money for them.
