MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN RENOVATING YOUR KITCHEN
Are you planning your first kitchen? Or are you simply remodeling the space? It doesn't matter if you're a neophyte decorator or if you've already been through it. In both cases there is a series of typical errors which imperil those who roll up their sleeves to renovate the entire kitchen, or just a few elements of this room. Knowing the errors beforehand is a good way to avoid inadvertently committing them and finding yourself having to live with the consequences. Here are the most common:
- The kitchen is not an isolated room. It is fundamental to consider the rest of the house. A classic or rustic style kitchen will definitely not match up well with a modern living room with minimalist and essential lines. This is equally true for the structure of the house: in an eighteenth century country farm house it's going to be difficult to harmoniously insert a modern or trendy kitchen. In some cases, when you are talking about a specifically chosen style, it is possible. But there you're going to need the help of a designer or architect.
- Don't make superficial decisions. Renovating your kitchen doesn't mean just deciding on a nice model. On the contrary. For a functional kitchen the look of it is the least important element. It's much more important to be sure you have enough storage space for your utensils, dishes, pots and pans, and drawers equipped with internal dividers, open faced shelves, etc. which will make working in the kitchen easier.
- Don't make decisions based on passing impressions. Expressing your creativity through your furnishings is important but the choice of color for the cabinets may not be the best occasion for a whimsical decision. If you want to add a touch of personal style, better concentrate on marginal elements like particular cabinet handles, or colorful accessories to be kept on the counter top. The important thing is to choose a cabinet on the base of personal taste, but which the whole family will like for at least fifteen years; don't let yourself be swayed by gaudy proposals.
- Don't forget the lighting. Many don't give illumination in the kitchen the importance it deserves. You need to plan out the locations of your light sources in relation to the work areas of the kitchen. It may not be the funniest part of planning a kitchen but a good lighting plan will undoubtedly make working in the kitchen safer and will help you get the most out of the furnishings as well.
- Don't change your mind half way through the work. If the changes you have in mind have to do with personal tastes that tend to change suddenly, before informing the contractor or architect who's half way through the job, better think about how much these changes are going to cost you. Substituting the counter top or the paneling on built in appliances may inflate the final cost quite a bit. If you change your mind a lot, you might want to first consider how much free rein you want to give to your inspiration, or at least try to make choices that will be less tiring in the long run.
- Study the layout of the kitchen. Renovating also means reconsidering the arrangement of each module. If you are tired of running the length of the kitchen to get to the refrigerator, don't hesitate to consider an alternative location.
- Don't buy appliances on the base of your aspirations. You can be a cooking enthusiast without being a famous chef. It's definitely not going to be the most expensive and complicated microwave oven that will turn you into a gourmet chef, especially if you haven't the least experience in elaborate cooking techniques. Be realistic, think about your concrete needs, it will help you in buying the appliance that is best for you.
